QUILTED COMMUNITY: current work
|
|
This series consists of 10 paintings and 18 mini quilt squares that represents a piece of my community. At the beginning of this process, each individual worked with me to select two or more fabrics they felt represented them in some way. These fabrics were then sewn together as a substrate for each persons painted portrait. This combination presents each of the ten people both abstractly as they perceive themselves and realistically with their likeness.
As the larger 12" x 12" quilt paintings were created, I used the scrap material to make a set of 4" x 4" mini squares that mixes up all fabrics used. Each of the individuals painted are put into a larger community through this jumbling of patterns and colors connects.

Katie Karban is an artist and teacher based in Spartanburg, SC. She is a 2020 Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate of Winthrop University with dual concentrations in Painting and Printmaking. She graduated magna cum laude with Honors Program distinction in May 2020. She is currently teaching art at the Dorman Freshman Campus.
She is interested in fiber arts, too, especially the history of textiles, patterns, and fabric-based items dealing with how individuals may relate to these items. The exploration of fabrics and patterns are used in her work to explore how a person may be represented in addition to rendered figure. In 2018, she studied abroad for six months full-time at the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, New Zealand. She received funding to attend a workshop at the Arrowmont School of Craft in 2019. Katie was accepted into the ArtFields Juried Competition in 2021 and 2024. In 2021, she was one of six artists selected to create art for the United Way of the Piedmont's Annual Celebration publication. |

Here at PPZ, we aim to shine a light on pressing climate issues, whilst documenting individual reflections on ecological experiences. The artists involved in each issue will have their work collated into a publication, printed entirely with vegetable inks on recycled papers. Real pressed flowers, plants and paper cut-outs will adorn each page.”
